It’s Almost Time – National Spicy Guacamole Day

authentic mexican restaurant

Yes, you read that correctly – tomorrow is National Spicy Guacamole Day. Who knew there was such a thing?!? We don’t know about you, but we are pretty excited here at La Santa Tacos & Tequila! As the go-to authentic Mexican restaurant in MA, you can put money on the fact that we have tableside guac to die for.

The goodness unveiled

If you’re a fan of guacamole, there is something about it that leaves you craving more. Perhaps it is the nutty richness of the avocado itself or the creamy blend of chopped cilantro and freshly squeezed lemon juice. Or, perhaps it is the addition of the jalapeño – a sure way to turn up the heat on the traditional dish. No matter what flavor has you coming back for more, there are a few staples in every good guacamole:

  • Avocados (of course), however, how they come is up to you – chopped, mashed, pureed, all work just fine!
  • Freshly squeezed lemon juice helps preserve the unique green color while adding just a bit of twang to every bite. However, we must mention that some prefer the lime over the lemon – it’s all in perception!
  • Chopped fresh cilantro. Again, you have the choice of how much or how little you use.
  • Diced tomatoes
  • Red onion or scallion, although some leave this ingredient to the side.
  • Optional: olive oil, garlic, your choice of spice

Let’s talk about that spice

Being that is National Spicy Guacamole Day, we must discuss the spice. While this is a broad topic solely based upon preference, there are several ways to give your guac an added kick!

  • Serrano Chilies – be sure to remove the seeds if you opt for serrano! That is unless you really enjoy a mouth full of fire! Notably hotter than the jalapeño, we think the serrano is awesome in guacamole and salsa!
  • Jalapeño Peppers – the jalapeño is an excellent option in which the heat level is easily kept to a dull roar.
  • Cayenne Pepper – The cayenne pepper averages a heat level 10 times higher than the jalapeño and is only beat in heat level but the habanero.
  • Other methods include red pepper flakes, sriracha or other hot sauces
