If you’re not familiar with this furry little mouse, here’s a fun article filled with facts about Speedy Gonzales for your next trivia night with friends.
Created by Warner Brothers Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies, Speedy Gonzales is an animated mouse of Mexican descent. Known for his yellow sombrero, exaggerated Spanish accent, and, of course, his zippy speed.
Speedy made his first appearance in 1953 in Cat-Tails for Two. However, it would be another two years before the character was redesigned and made a debut performance that set his on the road for fame. The cartoon short, Speedy Gonzales, won the 1955 Academy Award for Best Short.
During the Golden Age of American animation, Merrie Melodies came to life as a series of short animated films. Three of the Merrie Melodies series won the Academy Award for Best Short Film: Speedy Gonzales, Tweetie Pie, and Birds Anonymous. Another three of their films have been inducted into the National Film Registry: Duck Amuck, One Froggy Evening, and What’s Opera, Doc?
This short by Warner Brothers and Merrie Melodies features Speedy Gonzales, Sylvester the Cat, Wile E. Coyote, and the Road Runner. Some big names here, thus the ultimate question arises. Who is faster, Speedy or Road Runner? While this short is the only film to feature the two characters, the answer should be cut and dry. However, after a series of catapults, grenades, falling rocks, and other tactics, the two (spoiler alert) tie. Despite the tie, Speedy remains the fastest mouse in all of Mexico.
Although there has been controversy around the stereotypical character, his popularity and support from Latin American countries hold steady. Thus, what better representation of authentic Mexican food in MA, then an authentic Mexican mouse.
